May
is all about
Mom!
Mother's
day in France…
I
was raised in Toulouse, located in the South of
France. We would always celebrate Mothers Day as a
family by having a nice lunch.
Just
like in the Niagara Region, the growing season in
the south of France starts with asparagus. I
remember going to my cottage to pick wild asparagus
and to look for wild mushrooms for our celebration.
It was an annual tradition.
In
honor of my special memories of this occasion, we
have incorporated some of the ingredients here at
The Keefer Mansion with the asparagus and truffle
mousseline. My home town is also famous for
cassoulet…. our Mothers Day brunch on May 13th this
year will also provide guests with a little taste of
Toulouse.
I
also suggest that you try the sweet red pepper soup,
followed by Pan seared rainbow trout , finished with
Chocolate fondant with rhubarb compote! Priced at
$27.95. I do still have seatings at 11:00, 11:30,
1:00, and 1:30. A children’s menu is also available.

Trivia
Corner
A special tribute to a great Mom!
Catharine Lampman
George
Keefer married Catharine Lampman on February 6th,
1797, the daughter of a United Empire Loyalist who came
from Long Island, New York, and settled in Lincoln
County. Catherine and George had five sons and four
daughters. George was a Lieutenant, active in fighting
in 1813 in a company which was made up of young men from
Thorold and the
surrounding countryside.
The family home was seized and converted into a hospital
by American Soldiers wounded in the Battle of Beaverdams
(located just up the street). Catherine, who had a baby
only three months old at the time (John, the builder of
the Keefer Mansion), was in poor health. Anxiety about
her husband, the care of her family of eight small
children, together with the nursing of sick and wounded
American Soldiers, proved to be too much for her
weakened constitution and she contracted Typhoid fever,
Catharine
unfortunately died on July 14th,
1813, at age thirty-five.
To great mothers
everywhere…salute!

The
Keefer Mansion is owned by the City of Thorold. The
restoration lasted just over 3 years. each month we will
present a before and after picture of the project. Here
